Course Description

This introductory course is designed to teach students the basics of digital electronic devices and methodologies used in digital circuit design. Students will analyze, design, and trouble shoot logic gates, counters, registers, memory units, pulse and switching circuits, and control circuits. The course will also compare digital TTL integrated circuits along with other families of logic devices. A few weeks will be dedicated to the popular VHDL language, so that, at the end of the class, students will be able to take projects on their own.  We will use Quartus II from Altera Corporation (www.altera.com) as our VHDL platform and to create projects for an in-depth understanding of this hardware descriptive language.

Goals and Objectives

  1. Understand the numeric system used by computers.
  2. Describe the types of active and passive components and their use in logic design.
  3. Cover Boolean Algebra and function minimization techniques.
  4. Analyze and design basic combinational logic circuits.
  5. Analyze and use decoders and multiplexers.
  6. Introduction to sequential logic circuits, latch and flip-flop fundamentals.
  7. Use of the Hardware Description Language (HDL) for logic design.
  8. Describe the Digital Building Blocks and perform numerical operations.
  9. Explain the machine language and cover basics of programming
